How to Get Your Small Business Found on Google in Perthshire
When someone in Auchterarder, Crieff, Perth, or anywhere across Perthshire searches for what your business does, do they find you? If the answer is no — or you're not sure — this guide covers exactly what to do about it. No technical jargon, no expensive tools required.
Start with Google Business Profile
If you do one thing after reading this, make it setting up and completing your Google Business Profile. It's free, it takes an hour, and it's the single most effective thing a local Perthshire business can do to show up in Google's local results — the map and business listings that appear when someone searches for a service near them.
Go to business.google.com, claim your listing, and fill in every field. Business name, address, phone number, website, opening hours, photos, services, and a description. The more complete it is, the more Google trusts it. Ask your existing customers to leave you a Google review — even five genuine reviews will significantly improve where you show up.
Make sure your website mentions where you are
Google needs to understand where your business operates to show you in local search results. That means your website needs to mention your location — not just in the footer or on the contact page, but in the main content of your pages.
If you're a joiner based in Crieff, your homepage should say "joiner in Crieff" or "joinery services across Perthshire" somewhere in the body text, ideally in a heading. If you're a holiday let in Auchterarder, your site should reference Auchterarder, Perthshire, and the surrounding area naturally throughout the copy.
This isn't keyword stuffing — it's just being clear about who you serve and where you are.
Get your NAP consistent everywhere
NAP stands for Name, Address, Phone number. Google cross-references these details across your website, your Google Business Profile, any directories you're listed in, and your social media profiles. If your business name is slightly different on each one — "J Smith Plumbing" on one and "John Smith Plumbing Ltd" on another — it creates confusion and reduces your local search ranking.
Pick one consistent version of your business name, address, and phone number and use it everywhere. Exactly the same, every time.
Build pages around what people actually search for
Think about what your customers type into Google when they need what you offer. Not "bespoke joinery solutions" — but "kitchen fitter Perthshire" or "fitted wardrobes Perth." Those are the phrases your website pages need to be built around.
Each service you offer should ideally have its own page, with that specific service and location mentioned naturally in the heading, the first paragraph, and the page title. One page trying to cover everything rarely ranks for anything.
Get other local sites to link to you
Google decides how trustworthy your site is partly based on how many other websites link to it. For a local Perthshire business, a link from the local council business directory, the chamber of commerce, a local news site, or a complementary business in the area is worth more than a generic directory listing.
Think about which local organisations, associations, or businesses you could reasonably ask to include a link to your site. It doesn't need to be many — even two or three quality local links make a real difference.
Be patient — but be consistent
Local SEO is not instant. It typically takes three to six months of consistent effort before you see meaningful movement in search rankings. The businesses that win on Google are the ones that set things up properly, add content regularly, and keep their information consistent — not the ones that do a burst of activity and then stop.
The good news is that most of your local competitors in Perthshire aren't doing this properly. The bar is lower than you think.
